What type of battery should you use within your Schlage smart lock?
Schlage smart locks provide the best performance when alkaline batteries are used, these are installed on the interior side of the lock. Check the installation instructions for your Schlage smart lock to determine the battery size and quantity required.
What happens when batteries are incorrectly inserted?
Incorrectly inserting batteries will create an electrical imbalance. Even a single battery placed backwards effectively means you are overcharging that one battery. This has the potential to cause the cell to overheat and vent, leaking caustic potassium hydroxide which corrodes most metals it comes in contact with. The escaped electrolyte eventually forms a white crust of potassium carbonate as it reacts with carbon dioxide which is often seen on battery compartment terminals after leakage has occurred.
How can you avoid this damage?
Always read the instructions provided with your lock before installing batteries. Only use the size and type of battery specified and ensure they are inserted correctly. Follow the symbols marked on the inside of the battery compartment, showing the correct way to position the positive (+) and negative (-) ends and align batteries accordingly.
What to do if your batteries have leaked?
If leakage is discovered, wipe out the battery compartment with a dry cloth and replace with new batteries. In the event of exposure to leakage, wash the affected skin area with soap and water immediately.
